Synthetic Biology

What Is Synthetic Biology:

The engineering of biological systems has the potential to reshape the world and solve a number of major global challenges in various fields such as healthcare, energy and the environment. Synthetic biology is the engineering of biology, i.e. the synthesis of complex, biologically based or inspired systems which display functions that do not exist in nature. This engineering perspective may be applied at all levels of the hierarchy of biological structures – from individual molecules to whole cells, tissues and organisms.

Problem Statements:

Synthetic Biology has great potential to address challenging problems in many areas including energy, healthcare, and environment.

Relevance to Singapore:

Synthetic Biology can make a very significant impact on a number of industries in Singapore, e.g. food processing, water technology, chemical/petrochemical, and bio-medical, etc.
